Salt vs Chlorine Pool Sanitation

The key difference between saltwater and chlorine pools lies in how the chlorine is introduced and maintained—because both types of pools use chlorine to sanitize the water.

Saltwater Pools:

  • Use a salt chlorine generator, which converts dissolved salt (sodium chloride) into chlorine through a process called electrolysis.

  • Chlorine is produced continuously and in lower concentrations, which many swimmers find softer on the skin, eyes, and hair.

  • Saltwater pools typically require less manual chlorine handling, but the salt cell and generator require regular maintenance and eventual replacement.

  • Initial setup is more expensive due to the cost of the generator, but chemical costs can be lower over time.

Chlorine Pools:

  • Use traditional chlorine products (liquid, tablets, or granules) added manually or through a feeder.

  • Offer more direct control over chlorine levels but require frequent testing and balancing.

  • May result in stronger chlorine smells and more eye or skin irritation, especially if not properly balanced.

  • Lower upfront costs but potentially higher ongoing chemical expenses.

Summary:

  • Saltwater = automated, softer feel, higher upfront cost.

  • Chlorine = more manual control, lower initial cost, stronger chemicals.
